Blackboard Tip
Delayed Response in Essay Exams
By Jeremy Bond and Ireta Ekstrom

On occasion students report a delayed response when typing in essay answers during tests.  All is not lost, however, as there are some simple things that students can do to improve their experience in an online exam.

First, by disabling the WYSIWIG editor in their personal settings, they should be able to avoid the ‘delayed response’ issue.  To do so, the user her/himself needs to complete the following steps:

  1. Login to Blackboard
  2. Click “Personal Information” (left)
  3. Click “Set Visual Textbox Editor Options”
  4. Choose “Unavailable”
  5. Click “Submit”

As an instructor, you may wish to include these directions in your instructions to ensure a quality test experience for each student.
