Surveys in Blackboard
By Ireta Ekstrom, Instructional Designer

A great tool in Blackboard is the survey manager. It allows an instructor to get anonymous feedback from students that can be used in various ways. For example, during a course, an instructor can check to see if the pace is working for students, if there are topics or gaps in knowledge, or just to check to see how students view the course and the instruction.

Creating a survey functions the same way as the Test manager, however there are some very specific differences:

  • Survey questions cannot be given scores.
  • Surveys cannot include Random Blocks of questions.
  • Instructors cannot give Students feedback.
  • Surveys cannot be graded.
  • Survey questions cannot be categorized.
  • Questions may be imported into a Survey. However, those questions may not include correct and incorrect answers.

To create the survey questions:

  1. Click on the Control Panel.
  2. Under assessment, click on Survey Manager.
  3. Click +Survey (Add survey).
    • Fill in the information.
    • Click submit at the bottom of the page.
  4. On the next screen, click the down arrow to choose questions.  (For specific help on question types, go to FaCIT’s Blackboard Tutorials and look under Assignments/Grades).
  5. Click Go (next to the box).
  6. Fill in the information needed for this question type.
  7. Add additional questions, as needed.
  8. Click OK.

To deploy the survey for students to view:

  1. Enter a content area within the course.
  2. Click the down arrow on the right side of the screen – choose survey.
  3. Click Go.
  4. On the next screen click Add Survey and choose the survey to be deployed.
  5. Click Submit at the bottom of the page and OK on the next screen.
  6. Click Modify Survey Options to make the survey available and additional options.

To view the results:

  1. Enter the Gradebook from the Control Panel.
  2. Select the Survey by clicking on the name.
  3. Choose Assessment Attempt Details to view the aggregate results.
