News and Notes

In the wake of the tragedy yesterday at Virginia Tech, Todd Zakrajsek has written an article on methods for dealing with tragedy within the classroom.

In addition to that article, our newsletter this month has an interesting article by Alan O’Keefe and Marco Fornari on problem based learning. This is one of the many methods of helping students engage in the learning process and illustrates how they were able to use this method in Physics.

Our book review this month is by Jan Farmer on Judith Grunert’s book, The Course Syllabus: A Learning-Centered Approach. On that note, look at the books available for review this month. Remember, we will give the book to you – all we ask is a short review in return to share with other CMU faculty.

Additional information in the newsletter includes the Lilly North Conference and the MiBUG conference, an opportunity this month for attending a workshop on writing, and a spring Blackboard one-day workshop.

Until next time,
Ireta Ekstrom
