CMU Obtains Site License for Respondus 2.0

By: William C. Low, Ph. D.

The Blackboard course management system provides a fairly flexible environment for on-line testing, homework, and practice. Instructors learn very quickly, however, that the creation of these tests by using Blackboard's test canvas is very time consuming because the program has not yet provided a convenient way to upload questions that already exist in Word or Word Perfect documents. The Respondus test generation package does allow conversion of word processor documents into Blackboard compatible formats and provides a way to upload these as ready-to-use, on-line tests. It also provides a more user friendly and quicker test creation environment.

CMU’s Faculty Center for Innovative Teaching (FaCIT) has obtained a Respondus site license for CMU instructors. The program can be downloaded from the website:

http://www.facit.cmich.edu/instructional-development/blackboard/respondus.htm

An instructor’s manual (well written and very helpful) is available at:

http://www.respondus.com/products/userguide.shtml

If you need assistance beyond the manual, please contact CMU’s helpdesk at 989-774-3662 or 1-800-950-1144, ext. 3662, or contact the Blackboard Resource Group at 989-774-6411. Our license with Respondus, Inc. does not permit instructors to obtain support directly from Respondus. Our license does permit you to install a copy of the Respondus software on your home computer. However, please note that you are not permitted to provide the Respondus software or the password information to anyone who is not affiliated with our institution. Such an action is a violation of our licensing agreement and is illegal.
